Station of Earthbound Ghosts

Station of Earth-Bound Ghosts was a major art and poetry installation staged in the concourse of Auckland’s former central railway station in 1998.

The work comprised 30 large flags carrying poems by Leigh Davis. Centred on Te Kooti, the 19th-century Māori leader and Ringatū prophet, it explored his legacy and the history of colonisation in Aotearoa New Zealand.

ID8 Creative designed the flags in collaboration with book designer Christine Hansen and managed all aspects of production, from flag-making and installation to preparation of the venue.

The wider project included passages of text projected across the building’s façade and throughout the interior, together with advertising, advance publicity and signage.
